3 Ways to Honor Mary for the Solemnity of the Assumption
August 15 marks the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This solemnity celebrates the end of Mary’s earthly life and the beginning of her heavenly life, in keeping with the Catholic dogma that Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven. Though belief in the Assumption dates back to the early days of the Church, it was not declared dogma until 1950.
It is fitting that the body of the woman who gave birth to Jesus should not be corrupted by death, but should remain pure after death in heaven. Here are some ways we can honor the Blessed Virgin for this important day in the Church calendar.
1. Pray the Rosary
Praying the Rosary is a simple and straightforward way to honor Mary and grow closer to Jesus. Mary has asked us, through a number of apparitions, to pray the Rosary with frequency. Following her request is certain to please her, and anyone can do it. As Saint Louis de Montfort said, “When the Holy Rosary is said well, it gives Jesus and Mary more glory and is more meritorious than any other prayer.” Even if you do not have Rosary beads, you can count and keep track of your prayer using your fingers. As you pray, meditate on the Mysteries of the Rosary. If you wish to pray in a community with others, join us at CatholicTV and pray the Rosary on demand.
2. Restore a Statue of Mary
You can honor Mary by fixing up her statue at your local parish. Recently, a Boy Scout from Dedham, Massachusetts named John Williams refurbished a statue of Mary as his Eagle Scout project. His project is especially important on this solemnity, since the statue’s home is Dedham’s Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish. CatholicTV featured Williams and his project in August’s edition of Encounter, which is available on demand and will air on August 15 at 8:30pm ET. When we restore or refurbish statues of Mary, we help to properly honor the Mother of God. If your parish’s Marian statue is looking a little worse for the wear, talk to your pastor about what you can do. Even if your church’s statue is in great shape, you can honor Mary by visiting and leaving flowers.
3. Learn about the Blessed Virgin
There is so much to learn about Mary and so many ways to get to know her better. In addition to your prayers, read books and articles and watch videos to learn about Mary. A good place to start is with the short video series 7 Sorrows of Mary. As you grow in your learning and devotion, try moving on to books like True Devotion to Mary by Saint Louis de Montfort.
On this Solemnity of the Assumption, pray and reflect upon the reasons we honor Mary. Remember these words of Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori: “Mary having co-operated in our redemption with so much glory to God and so much love for us, Our Lord ordained that no one shall obtain salvation except through her intercession.”
