7. Sacred Tradition | 25 Gifts of the Church
According the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture are closely tied. Both flow from the Holy Spirit and make the mystery of Christ present in the world. Unlike other denominations of Christianity, the Catholic Church “does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone.” (CCC 82) The Catechism continues on to say that “Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence.” We must, however, note that Sacred Tradition is different than various local traditions and devotions that develop among the faithful over time. These smaller traditions all stem from Sacred Tradition, but they do not carry the same authority.
