Called to Serve - Bonnie Rodgers
Today I leave for Ghana on a trip to see up close the work of Catholic Relief Services in that country. I should say our work because CRS is the global aid arm of the U.S. Church. I've always regarded this agency as one that truly exemplifies the four marks of the church: One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic.
The readings for the Baptism of the Lord and the psalm and caticle for morning prayer highlight exactly why we feel called and compelled to do service work in other countries in the name of the Church. Sunday's morning prayer intercessory asks God to "make us living witnesses of your gospel of new life" and to allow us to share in the Lord'ss saving mission. Jesus attended to both the spiritual and corporal needs of the people he encountered.
Migration week just concluded and January is Poverty awareness month. These initiatives coupled with the work of CRS embolden us to live out the words of Isaish 61:1
The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me;
He has sent me to bring good news to the afflicted,
to bind up the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
release to the prisoners.
