Reformer Saint | Catherine of Siena
CatholicTV Webathon Novena: Day 5
Thank you for dedicating nine days of your Lenten journey to the CatholicTV Webathon Novena. Today, Day 5 of the Novena, we ask Saint Catherine of Siena to pray for us.
Catherine was one of 23 children, and she was intensely religious and intelligent from a young age. At 18, Catherine entered the Dominican Third Order and spent years in austere seclusion, devoting herself to contemplative prayer. She gained followers and began writing letters of encouragement and instruction. Catherine advocated for repentance, renewal, and unity in the Church. After she discerned that Christ was calling her into public life, Catherine traveled extensively to exhort the faithful to come back to Christ and to the one true Church. When the Western Schism began in 1378 and there were multiple “popes” vying for legitimacy, Catherine tirelessly defended Pope Urban VI by writing letters, appearing at courts, and attempting to persuade as many people as she could of his true legitimacy. In the last few years of her life Catherine rarely consumed anything except the Eucharist. She fell ill at age 33 and died in Rome. St. Catherine of Siena is a Doctor of the Church and a vivid example of what it means to have a heart that burns for Christ and His Church.
Holy Spirit, come into my heart; draw it to Thee by Thy power, O my God, and grant me charity with filial fear. Preserve me, O ineffable Love, from every evil thought; warm me, inflame me with Thy dear love, and every pain will seem light to me. My Father, my sweet Lord, help me in all my actions. Amen.
Today, fast from secular media and watch religious programming instead. We recommend watching and praying along with the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary with Bishop Reed.
Your financial support helps keep the faithful connected with the Church and allows us to reach millions of souls who might not otherwise hear the Good News. This year, all donations made to CatholicTV during the Webathon Novena, March 8-16, will be tripled by generous benefactors! If you give $1, CatholicTV receives $3. And each day we will randomly select one donor to receive a rosary blessed by Bishop Reed and a book! If you're able to offer CatholicTV financial support in any amount, you can do so here:
